Sometimes, some of the best designs are the result of an innovative use of an object from a totally different initial concept. Our Down South Grill is one of those designs. About 10 years ago, our parent company, Patterson Fan Inc. was having an employee cookout for lunch as we often did. It was summer and we had many temporary people on staff to meet our production and sales needs for the hot season.

The cook was grilling on some cheap, inexpensive grills and needed additional grilling space. He placed a bottom in one of our fan hulls, put some charcoal in it, put a top on it and began cooking. He soon noticed the even flow of heat and the efficient way it cooked the meat. Soon after, a patent was filed for our “venturi” burn area and Down South Grills was born. 

Mrs. Patterson looked at the design and offered suggestions with the consumer in mind. One of these, a standard on Down South Grills, is the patented “Shuttle-Top”. The combination charcoal/gas cooking ability is also a standard on Down South Grills. 

We have evolved over the years, refining our product along the way. Our Summer Kitchen concept allows you to design, grow, and change your outdoor grilling space to meet your changing demands. 

“In 1999, I was in St. Croix, U.S. Virgin Islands. The resort where we were staying had an outdoor kitchen area. I looked at my wife and said ‘One day I will have one of those.’ A few years after I returned, I approached Down South and asked to work on the Summer Kitchen concept for them.
